I have to admit that some of it definitely went over my head–after spending not nearly as much time I wanted to in England, there are some jokes I was for sure not going to understand. Bryson’s wit is always dry, but it is also loving to the small towns and experiences he had while living there. This includes commenting on its architecture, food, people, and historical events, which all paint a picture of a country redefining itself after basically running the world. Observing the absurdities of English culture and adding in some history along the way, we get a true sense of love for Bryson’s adopted home and what it is that makes the English so…English. Notes from a Small Island book reviewīefore Bryson makes the move back to his native United States (citing hilariously that “we need him”), he decides to take a trip from one end of England and Scotland to another. I finally decided to pick it up, and I am glad that I did. However, if this Covid-19 has given me anything, it’s a lot of time to read. Notes from a Small Island had been sitting on my bookshelf for several years, and I still hadn’t made the effort to pick it up. I’ve long been a fan of Bill Bryson after reading The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, but to be honest, I had never read his travel books.
